Prior to my sculpting studies in Maastricht, with Piet Killaars (1973), I worked with ceramics a lot, both in hand-sculpting, as well as wheel-throwing.
As a sculptor, I use clay as a means to design sculptures, or as material on its own. In the last 8 years, I’ve worked exclusively with ceramics; with both earthenware or stoneware, and with electrical as well as gas firing. After a masterclass with ceramist Hein Severeins, I was stimulated to make my own glazes.
On the wheel I look for clean shapes that “stand”.
In my sculptural ceramics I have more freedom.
As a sculptor, I’m always looking for strong, clean shapes.
On the wheel, I continue to look for the perfect curve.
Searching for new shapes and techniques, remains the most important thing for me.
I’ve always worked as a professional artist, and besides this, Guusje van Noorden and I have had a gallery/atelier in Maastricht for 35 years: Gallery Schuwirth & Van Noorden.
